What Sets the Price on a Utility Scope

A utility scope is shaped by two things that sit below the surface and cost real money when they are estimated instead of read: how deep the system runs, and what is already in the ground.

  • Depth drives the entire trench. A sewer running deep is not simply more excavation. It brings shoring, dewatering, potentially a different trench configuration, and a change in how spoil is handled. A scope that accounts for the pipe but not the depth understates the work.
  • Existing utilities do not move for the schedule. A water line the drawings did not show, a gas main crossing the run, a mismarked service. What is already underground sets the crossings and the sequence, and getting it wrong surfaces as delay in the field.

Because Mighty Arm grades the site and backfills the trench under the same scope, depth and conflicts are read before the proposal goes out, while there's still time to price them.

Why a GC Awards Earthwork and Utilities Together

On nearly every new development, utilities are expected to sit within the excavation scope. The contractor moving the dirt is the contractor setting the pipe, because almost every new plat, subdivision, and commercial site needs new sewer, storm, and water, and splitting that off to a separate utility sub creates a seam where the trench, and the accountability for it, gets divided.

  • No divided responsibility at the trench. When one subcontractor grades, excavates, and backfills, there is no dispute over whether soft subgrade belongs to the earthwork scope or the utility scope. It sits with Mighty Arm end to end.
  • Backfill goes in to the earthwork specification. The compaction over the pipe is held to the same standard as the site's structural fill, because both fall under one scope rather than two that have to agree.
  • One sequence instead of two that must be stitched. Site preparation, earthwork, and utilities are coordinated under a single subcontractor, so a shift in one phase does not strand a separate sub waiting at the gate.
  • One point of accountability for the underground utilities. From proposal through connection and closeout, the whole system runs through one subcontractor.

Public projects are within scope. On this work, Mighty Arm meets the prevailing-wage requirements set by the county or city. Do you warranty the work?

Workmanship is warranted for one year from substantial completion. Manufacturer warranties on supplied materials pass through to the owner. The warranty does not cover damage caused by others, settlement beyond normal tolerances, misuse, or changes in how the site is used.
